My name is David Eli Tompkins. I’m an artist based in New York City. My studio is in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

I make large paintings on canvas and small paintings on paper. Observational processes and documentation inform my work. I paint scenes of intriguing spaces, which become somewhat flat, noiseless, and subdued.

I study cultural and social systems, communication, and American society. My subjects are generally architectural but can be narrative or abstract.

These small oil paintings, which I call postcard paintings are the most consistent format in my painting practice.

They're small, and until recently I made them as an exercise to keep the observational practice going and dig for new ideas.

But then I designed a new framing process based on my experiences working for a fine art framer.

I fabricate the frames myself, and I’m playing around to see how far I can go with these processes.

I went to RISD
I made some art
Then I made failed projects and worked crappy jobs
Finally, I hired a business coach and got my shit together
Now maybe I've made something good
I'm actually quite good at art, you know
But do I make anything YOU like?
I will try
(With integrity, I make what I want)

Short Comment: what it is to be brief. A calm tone delivers a critical message.

A clear moment is more complex than all the hours of the day.

All painting is poetry, and a work of art must be descriptive.

The details that proliferate only through fewer words and a simpler message.

A gestalt that forms as the message is shortened.
